Am I Eligible For The Abortion Pill
Before deciding if the abortion pill is right for you, a physical exam, ultrasound, and STD testing should be performed. These steps will provide information to determine eligibility for the abortion pill.
What Is The Abortion Pill?
The abortion pill, sometimes called a medical abortion, is a series of two drugs that work together to terminate a pregnancy. Mifepristone is given first, usually at the provider’s office, and it blocks the body’s progesterone, a hormone used to support pregnancy. Within 48 hours, misoprostol is taken at home to start uterine contractions. The pregnancy is forced out of the woman’s body with heavy bleeding and cramping.
Why Do I Need An Ultrasound?
The abortion pill is not a safe option for all pregnancies. Obtaining the appropriate test safeguards a woman’s health. An ultrasound is crucial before using the abortion pill for a few reasons:
- 10-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Ultrasound can identify a heartbeat to determine if your pregnancy is viable. If the pregnancy is not growing, it might pass on its own, or intervention might be required. Either way, treatment for a miscarriage is different from abortion in that your regular doctor can care for you.
- The FDA only approves the abortion pill to end pregnancies under 10 weeks. An ultrasound will verify how far along the pregnancy is.
- The abortion pill is not effective in the termination of ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a pregnancy attaches somewhere in the body other than the wall of the uterus. This condition is life-threatening for the woman and requires immediate treatment.
Why Do I Need STD Testing?
STDs can be asymptomatic, meaning you can have an STD for years without knowing. STDs can increase the risk of complications from the abortion pill, including a severe infection called pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID can lead to chronic pelvic pain and increase the risk of future ectopic pregnancy and infertility.
Medical History
It is essential to disclose your medical history to your provider before an abortion to rule out other circumstances that might make the abortion pill unsafe. Other factors that might make you ineligible include:
- Blood clotting disorders or anemia
- Currently having an IUD in place
- Unable to return for follow-up appointments
- No access to emergency care

Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Do I need an appointment?
Answer: Walk-ins are welcome. However, it is best to make an appointment to minimize your office wait time.
Question: What is the cost?
Answer: All our services are free and confidential.
Question: What should I expect when I come for my visit?
Answer: Upon your arrival, our friendly receptionist will introduce you to a registered nurse that will provide your care. This RN will offer you a judgement-free space to talk, followed by essential information and a pregnancy test. In the event of a positive test result, your nurse will perform a limited obstetric ultrasound to verify the pregnancy's viability and estimate the age of the fetus.
Question: How long after sex does it take for a pregnancy test to work and how accurate is the test?
Answer: Our tests can be performed 7 to 10 days after conception. A client with a negative result may be invited to return within 2 weeks for a repeat test if she has not had her period.
If you have taken a home pregnancy test, you may want to confirm results with a laboratory-quality test at our medical office. Our tests detect HCg levels within 7 to 10 after conception.
Question: Will you tell anyone about my visit?
Answer: We maintain a rigorous privacy and confidentiality policy. Our clients' information is safeguarded against unauthorized disclosure, respecting their right to privacy, except in instances mandated by law. This includes situations necessary for public health, preventing harm to the client or others, or in specific circumstances where the use or disclosure of information is justified without prior consent, such as in cases of abuse reporting or suicide/homicide prevention.
Question: When should I schedule an appointment?
Answer: Our high-quality, medical-grade pregnancy tests are capable of detecting pregnancy from the first day after your initial missed period. We advise scheduling an appointment if you've missed a period, have any queries related to pregnancy, or suspect that you might be pregnant.
Question: How far along do I have to be to get a free ultrasound?
Answer: After an initial consultation with one of our RN's, we offer on-site ultrasound scans. These limited ultrasounds are conducted by “a registered nurse or a registered diagnostic medical sonographer (RDMS)” and are subsequently reviewed by a licensed physician. The purpose of an ultrasound is to confirm the viability of the pregnancy and to establish the gestational age.
Question: I already know I'm pregnant and I want an abortion, what's next?
Answer: It is advisable to have an ultrasound to confirm the viability of your pregnancy and to ensure it is located within the uterus, as 20% to 25% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Moreover, the ultrasound helps in determining the stage of your pregnancy, which is essential in making an informed decision about the type of abortion procedure you may consider. We offer a limited ultrasound free of charge.
